AMPANG, SELANGOR – The group of thieves who sprayed security guards as a trial run were caught last Wednesday, according to authorities.

The groups of Malays, according to eyewitnesses, are made up of one Malay woman and four Malay men.

It is believed that in the early hours of the night, just before dawn, this group drive around residential areas spraying the guards or any night jogger with pepper spray or an unknown toxic spray to temporarily blind their victim and even allowing the perpetrator to escape.

A security guard by the name of Ravi*, 34, has stood guard on Jalan 12 of Taman Tun Abdul Razak for 10 years, guarding the houses and the mosque nearby.

“Although this is not the first time there was a robbery in the area, this is the first time they have stunned me with spray and then they run away,” Ravi says.

“I was taking a nightly walk as a check up when this group comes along, two motorbikes and they spray me in the face.

“Because of that, I did not get to see the plate number and now there is danger again here.”

Ravi sits on night watch in a small guardhouse, observing every night.

“These motorcyclists come around two or three in the morning and they go round and round the area. Luckily there is a neighborhood watch and we alert them quickly.”

Mohd Rafi Bin Maidingkali, 48, is a security guard from Myanmar who is one of the few victims who were sprayed by the group.

He says this group started coming from last year, but began first only as two people on a motorbike just to survey the area.

“Last year, they come twice or three times at 2am, 3am,” said Mr Mohd Rafi. “This time when they sprayed me, I saw a girl with them.”

As a security guard who has worked in the area for five years but keeps getting transferred within the area, Mr Mohd Rafi is very certain that it is the same group.

“They use pepper spray, so when I wanted to interfere, they sprayed my whole body including my shirt, pants, and my cap,” he continued.

However, to his relief, the group had already been caught and interrogated, due to the tireless complaints of the residents and the security guards in the area.

“First time round, they caught the guy and the girl and the following week they caught the other three,” Mr Mohd Rafi tells.

Two doors away, another night guard in the area, a Nepali by the name of Mr Bahadur Budatuki was temporarily blinded as they spray him in the face.

“I was sitting outside there and I observed two motorbikes come my way – one stops here while the other stops two doors ahead,” he said.

“I was simply looking at him but then he came up to me and sprayed my face and ran away, and because of that I couldn’t see his face or the plate number.”

Naresh Mohan, 50, who lives just in the same neighbourhood is part of the neighborhood friendly watch.

“I think it’s a trial run for them. They want to see how the public reacts to this so that they can probably prepare and enforce more heavy weapons or high-tech gadgets to rob our houses or kidnap our children.”

Mohan is part of a neighbourhood watch group consisting of 30 people that alert each other through Whatsapp and Facebook in case of any slight happenings in the area.

“Before this we had a monkey problem. Now we have security blocking that area so cars cannot pass through and they don’t get to litter the area and treat it like trash,” said Mr Mohan.

As of now, there are security guards who sit day and night blocking that area so that no cars can pass through without reason or permission and a patrol car to survey the area.
